The FIFA World Cup kicks off tomorrow. Though the first match in Arlington isn’t until this Sunday, it seems all of North Texas is now fully engulfed in celebrating the tournament.
Unfortunately, some sacrifices have had to be made.
First of all, Dallas residents are still upset at the Whaling Wall mural being painted over, and now DFW residents are being encouraged to change their commute and travel habits in order to accommodate World Cup travelers.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the North Central Texas Council of Governments is asking residents to make “temporary, voluntary adjustments,” and urging North Texans to minimize their time on the roads during the World Cup’s tenure in the area.
Karla Windsor, the council’s senior program manager of land-use and mobility options, said, “We are telling people to look at alternate routes, if possible.”
This may involve change your commute times by either leaving for work earlier or later to avoid congestion on major roadways or taking completely different routes altogether.
Regional officials also said that if residents must travel, they should consider carpooling and combining errands into fewer trips and less time on the road.
Natalie Bettger, the council’s senior program manager of congestion management and system, added, “We encourage residents to check travel information before heading out and consider small adjustments on match days.
“By planning ahead, we can help keep North Texas moving while welcoming visitors from around the world.”
Arlington will hold nine World Cup matches, more than any other host city in the tournament, which is expected to draw more than one million visitors to DFW.
