When Richard Smith was in school at Mississippi State, he dated a woman named Jan Branton.
They dated throughout all four years of school. Unfortunately, they drifted apart after Smith went into the military.
He spent 20 years in the Army and followed that with 23 years in the Civil Air Patrol.
Though neither Richard nor Jan really kept up with one another, they never forgot each other.
They reconnected on the phone, which ended with Richard flying to Georgia to see Jan in person. Whenever he saw her at the airport, he immediately dropped to a knee, produced a ring, and proposed.
Per NBC DFW, though Richard lives at Asher Point Independent Living of Arlington, he is spending more time in Georgia, where the couple will exchange vows later this year, and where he expects to move there after the wedding.
"She is the dream I've been waiting for. I've loved her for 50 years," he said.
