New study ranks Dallas fourth for most “financially distressed” residents in America

If you’re stressing over your finances right now, does it give some solace that you’re not alone?

A new report from WalletHub found Dallas fourth in the nation for most “financially distressed” residents.

According to CultureMap Dallas, the report analyzed 100 of the largest U.S. cities across nine personal finance metrics including average credit scores and year-over-year changes; the share of residents with accounts in distress and year-over-year changes; the average number of accounts in distress; year-over-year change in bankruptcy filings from September 2024 to September 2025; and "debt" and "loans" search interest indexes.

The top ten most financially distressed cities include:

1 – Chicago
2 – Houston
3 – Las Vegas
4 – Dallas
5 – Los Angeles
6 – San Antonio
7 – Atlanta
8 – New York
9 – Austin
10 – Phoenix
