It was just a few years ago that most people in the metroplex had no clue what ERCOT was or what they did. However, after the disastrous winter storm that hit Texas a few years back, it seems every time the power goes out the entire state is ready to blame ERCOT. Now, ERCOT is giving Texans yet another reason to be upset, as they have warned brownouts could be coming this summer.
On Wednesday, ERCOT released a report on how well the power grid is expected to handle the increase in temperatures over the next few months. Based on the data, there is concern demand will outpace the power supply at some points throughout the summer, according to NBC DFW. “On the hottest days of summer there is no longer enough on demand, dispatchable power generation to meet demand in our system,” said Peter Lake, chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
With more people moving to Texas every year, the state’s grid has struggled to keep up with the population boom. To help prevent brownouts, ERCOT is asking residents to conserve power and use other emergency reserve tools in place. Hopefully there prediction is wrong, and the entire state remains cool this summer.
