Over the weekend, the Fort Worth Fire Department woke up to a new resident: a dog that had been abandoned outside their station.
Rather than send the dog to a shelter, hoping a loving family would adopt him, the department decided to take him in for themselves!
The department wrote in a social media post, “Early on the morning of May 16th, one of the crew members at Station 8 heard a dog whining outside his bedroom window. A few of us went out to investigate and found a dog chained to our flagpole. There was a water bottle nearby with a note inside.”
According to WFAA, the dog was named “Jake,” and he was left by a homeless United States veteran who felt that he could no longer care for him.
While the firefighters, their spouses, and co-workers posted pics online with the hopes of finding Jake a forever home, there were no takers. So the department decided to take in Jake as one of their own.
Jake is being well taken care of with all of the food, treats, and toys and he was also vaccinated and treated to a bath in the truck room.
The department doesn’t normally accept abandoned animals, and Jake’s situation is a rare occasion, but the crew couldn't help but have their heart warmed by a veteran in need and a dog “with an infectious smile.”
"We just thought we would tell you the story of how a heartbroken man made an incredibly tough decision and everything about the moment just lined up perfectly to work out right," said Fort Worth station 8.
