There are few things that beat a Friday night trip to Blockbuster to grab a couple of VHS tapes and a Nintendo 64 game that would keep you occupied from Friday night to the wee hours of Monday morning.
With the rise of streaming services, Blockbuster has become nothing but a relic, a memory of a past life that was simple, where morality was determined by if you rewound the tape before you returned it.
Inside a growing San Antonio entertainment complex, that nostalgia of yesteryear is making a comeback with the city’s first-ever “free” Blockbuster.
The concept is simple: you visit the Blockbuster, and if you take a movie…leave one.
The Blockbuster is part of My Weekend World Event Center, an “ecosystem of small businesses,” as owner Mike Strickland told MySA.com, that houses a recording studio, an arcade, a small movie theater, and tons of shopping opportunities for 90s/Y2K nostalgia.
The free Blockbuster was the brainchild of Kevin Clary, who runs a pop-up '90s nostalgic toy store inside My Weekend World Events Center, who was inspired by the Free Blockbuster project, which started in 2019.
Clary wrote online, “We're proud to bring a piece of retro fun to Alamo City, and can't wait to have the community keep it stocked and thriving. Come Rewind the Fun, swap a flick, and be part of San Antonio's very first Free Blockbuster!"
My Weekend World Event Center is open from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, and is located at 435 McCarty Rd, San Antonio, TX 78216.
