A new sport is growing in popularity out in West Texas, so much so that one university is spending $1 million to certify it as a Varsity sport.
According to Chron, Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene recently registered a new project with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation that outlines a $1 million development for women’s flag football.
John Neese, HSU’s Director of Athletics, said in a statement, “At Hardin-Simmons, we believe in offering opportunities that integrate academics, character, and competition.
“The addition of women’s flag football gives our student-athletes a chance to compete at a high level in a sport that reflects the values of teamwork, discipline, and innovation.”
Women’s flag football will become the school’s newest Varsity sport beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
Hardin-Simmons is one of 10 schools in Texas that will debut women's flag football next spring. The others include Concordia, East Texas Baptist, Howard Payne, Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry and Schreiner at the Division III level, Texas Wesleyan and Our Lady of the Lake at the NAIA level, and UT-Arlington, which will become the state’s first Division I women’s flag football team.
