A multibillion-dollar mini-Venice, complete with canals and a massive lagoon, could soon be making its way to North Texas.
It’s the dream of 68-year-old developer Jeff Blackard, who wants to construct The Marco at the northeast corner of the Dallas North Tollway and U.S. 380.
Inspired by Venice, The Marco would include:
-Up to 4,400 residential units. This includes 2,500 apartments, 500 senior-living units and roughly 1,000 other units that could include condos, villas, townhomes and cottages. Pricing will range widely. The least expensive units would rent for $2,500 a month. The most expensive condos could go for north of $10 million.
-Up to two hotels.
-Up to two office buildings of about 14 stories. A 15-acre lagoon with a canal system big enough for water taxis.
-A connected pedestrian path around the lagoon.
Blackard told the Dallas Morning News he hopes the project could be completed five to seven years after construction starts, and if everything goes perfectly, he could break ground as soon as next winter.
