You never know what you’ll find at an estate sale. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure they say.
One person’s trash may also be a deadly weapon almost 80 years old.
The Austin Police Department was called to an estate sale after one of the boxes contained live grenades that are thought to be from World War II.
The Austin PD’s Bomb Squad confirmed that the grenades were live and active. Officers secured the scene and safely seized and removed the grenades.
The department said the grenades did not present an immediate threat under the circumstances, but that their age and apparent condition warranted "appropriate precaution.
They wrote in an email to Chron, “Bomb Squad personnel assessed the devices, including X-ray examination. Based on their interpretation of the X-ray images, the grenades appeared to be live and were treated accordingly. Bomb Squad personnel subsequently conducted render-safe procedures to eliminate any potential hazards.”
The department added that there is no ongoing investigation associated with the incident and that no crime occurred.
