Today is National Fossil Day, and if you’re looking to dig up any old bones there are few places better to be than the Lone Star State.
New research from social casino ACE.com lists Texas as the No. 4 state in the nation for fossil finding and “treasure hotspots.”
ACE.com determined its rankings based in five key factors: shipwrecks, gold deposits, meteorite strikes, prehistoric fossils, and rare-earth mineral occurrences.
California ranked No. 1, followed by Alaska, Florida, and Texas. New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, North Carolina, and Colorado rounded out the top ten.
The data found that Texas has 497 prehistoric fossil records, the 8th highest of any state in the study, and 974 recorded shipwrecks and 317 meteorite strikes, ranking third nationally for both categories.
