Tonight is the final of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and though Texas will be pretty well represented, there is only one student competing for the top prize.
Avishka Dudala, an eighth grader at Rogers Middle School in Prosper, is the lone student from DFW competing in the finals. She competed in the event last year, and tied for 41st place, per NBC DFW.
Last year, Plano ISD student Faizan Zaki won the championship after correctly spelling “éclaircissement.” He took home a grand prize worth $50,000.
Texas has more champions than any other state, with 17 winners in the competition’s history. Dallas has six winners from the area.
