There are statues all over the country that honor the history and legacy of the town they are located in. Now, the city of McKinney has decided to commission a statue to commemorate one of their proudest accomplishments. The statue will honor the 50th anniversary of the movie ‘Benji,’ which was filmed in McKinney.

Earlier this week, the city of McKinney announced they have signed a contract with Susan Norris, a nationally recognized sculptor, to build their new Benji statue. The statue will be located on the sidewalk at the southeastern corner of Tennessee and Virginia Streets, according to CBS DFW. While some were confused as the reasoning for the statue honoring the 1974 film, Downtown McKinney served as the primary outdoor filming location.

The project is being funded by the City of McKinney and administered by the McKinney Arts Commission. Sadly it won’t be unveiled until February 2023 at a ceremony before a special film screening. Soon everyone will remember McKinney as the true home of ‘Benji.’
