Mel Gibson confirms he will replace late Richard Donner as ‘Lethal Weapon’ director

Rumors of a new ‘Lethal Weapon’ movie have floated around for years, but when director Richard Donner revealed he was working on a new installment of the franchise in 2020, many fans thought they would finally get their wish. Sadly, Donner passed away in July, and plenty thought that meant the end of franchise. However, Mel Gibson recently confirmed he plans to replace Donner as director of ‘Lethal Weapon 5.’

Mel Gibson has led a number of iconic films throughout his career, but for many fans; they can only see the actor as Martin Riggs from ‘Lethal Weapon.’ The actor, who has starred alongside Danny Glover in the franchise since 1987, was recently asked about plans for another installment of the iconic cop-action movie franchise. “The man who directed all the Lethal films, Richard Donner, he was a big guy. He was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it… But he did ask me to do it and at the time I didn’t say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So I will be directing the fifth one,” said Gibson.

According to NME, ‘Lethal Weapon 5’ is expected to be the final film in the franchise. Hopefully Gibson can help the franchise go out with a bang.
