So will it be the chicken or fish?

Soon on some American Airlines flights, you won’t have to wait until the actual plane to make that decision as the airline will soon be conducting tests of passengers reserving food on their flights.

The tests will begin on flights later this month between DFW Airport and LAX and will allow travelers to reserve select food items starting seven days and up to 20 hours before departure.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the order is then prepared and boarded specifically onto the customer’s flight. When customers receive their items onboard, their payment is processed automatically.

Raphael Girardoni, American’s vice president of culinary strategy and operations, said that the program was developed after the airline received feedback from customers and flight attendants about how there wasn’t enough food stocked up on airplanes.

“We don’t always know exactly how much we should have on board because we don’t know how many people want to buy something,” he said. “We can forecast that, and we try to get it right, but we’re just not always right about how much we have on board.”

For customers on eligible flights, food reservations can be made through the American Airlines app or aa.com beginning Oct. 13, when customers on DFW-to-LAX flights departing on Oct. 20 will be able to start reserving food in advance.
