In North Texas, where after-school practices have been underway for weeks and the summer heat lingers, the well-being of students remains a top priority. Coaches have had to adapt to the scorching temperatures, and many have reluctantly canceled practices to ensure safety.
However, one local school district may have found a solution to address these cancellations while keeping everyone protected. Mesquite ISD has made a smart investment in multipurpose pavilions, potentially revolutionizing high school sports practice. Frank Sandoval, the campus coordinator and head football coach at Mesquite High School, knows firsthand how extreme heat can disrupt their preparation for games.
Sandoval explained, "We would have to cancel practice. Sometimes we would have to delay practice. Sometimes we would have to go in a gym, and it’s really hard to simulate a football field in a gym or other spaces."
But in recent weeks, the team has enjoyed uninterrupted practice sessions under a multipurpose pavilion installed over the practice field. This innovation provides both players and coaches with much-needed shelter from the harsh sun, ensuring safer and more effective practice sessions.
