Reboots and sequels of nostalgic TV shows and movies have become the norm in Hollywood, as countless projects of that kind have been made in recent years. However, when it comes to rebooting children shows, often times the audience is too old to care anymore. That’s why many have attempted to bring the beloved characters into the adult world, either adding graphic or adult themes to keep their aging audience interested. Apparently the next children’s show to attempt this will be ‘Barney,’ as a new “surrealist” version of the show is currently in development.
With ‘Barbie’ set to hit theaters later this month, Mattel is already planning another beloved character’s big screen debut, Barney. The project will reportedly star Daniel Kaluuya, who will also serve as producer. However, the movie will be more aimed at adults who grew up with Barney, according to NME.
“Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney — just the level of disenchantment within the generation,” said Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon. This could either end up ruining some childhoods, or make way too many adults into Barney again.
