There are some commercials that stick in people’s heads years after they have stopped airing. One of those is the “spongmonkey” campaign used by Quiznos in the early 2000s that had weird rodent-like figures with human eyes and mouths signing about their love of toasted subs. Now, Quiznos is bringing back the iconic mascots in attempt of a major comeback for the sub shop.

Quiznos has been quietly plotting a comeback since being purchased by REGO Restaurant Group in 2018. The sandwich chain has plans to open 100 new restaurants and a new kitchen model for each storefront, but to get people excited about their return they have also released a commercial featuring the iconic spongmonkeys. According to The Takeout, the commercial features the return of the original creator, Joel Veitch.

In the commercial, the spongmonkeys sing about gas prices, gas station restrooms, and billboards. “It’s harder to find a Quiznos these days. And we’re here to fix that. Because it’s a new day, and we’re bringing Quiznos back,” a voiceover says in the commercial. Maybe the spongmonkey return will be the spark Quiznos needed all these years.
