It's not a fun time to be a retail worker in Dallas. Not only do the customers seem more unruly than ever before, in-store theft appears to be at an all-time high.
According to an analysis of 24 major cities by the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice, through the first half of 2023 shoplifting in Dallas increased 73%! Only Los Angeles has seen a bigger increase in retail theft, where shoplifting has increased a whopping 109%!
This shouldn't come as a surprise to Dallas officials, though.
According to the Dallas Morning News, though many cities saw a decline in shoplifting during the pandemic, since so many stores were closed, shoplifting in Dallas actually remained flat, only to pick up at the end of last year.
So far this year, shoplifting cases reported to the Dallas Police Department have increased by 56.1% from the same period last year.
Ernesto Lopez, a research specialist and co-author of the Council's report, said there's really only one thing that can stop this growing trend of shoplifting. Better data from law enforcement and the retail industry are needed "to help strengthen our grasp of shoplifting trends," he said.
