A group of geology students from Sul Ross University were recently led on an expedition by professors Dr. Jesse Kelsch and Dr. Thomas Schiller to Big Bend National Park where they intended to study rock layers and geological formations from the Cretaceous to the Eocene periods.

Instead, they made a massive discovery unlike which the park has seen before.  And when we say "massive," we mean that literally.

The group uncovered an almost complete fossil of an Alamosaurus, one of the world's largest dinosaurs and the largest known land-dwelling animal on the continent!

According to Chron, the fossil is now back at the SRSU paleontology lab, where students and researchers are carefully studying it, along with associated vertebrae previously collected from the same quarry.
