Last year, Texas was ranked as the most financially stressed state in the nation in a survey from WalletHub.
This year, we have a little something to celebrate as we are no longer No. 1!
We’re still not completely secure with our wallets though, as Texas still ranked in the top five most financially stressed states in the U.S.
WalletHub ranked Texas No 4 in the U.S., finding that Texas had the fourth-biggest spike in bankruptcy filings across the country from March 2025 to March 2026, and that Texas residents had the 10th worst average credit scores in the U.S.
The ten most financially stressed states in the nation, according to the study, are:
1 – Kansas
2 – Louisiana
3 – Florida
4 – Texas
5 – South Carolina
6 – Wyoming
7 – Georgia
8 – California
9 – North Carolina
10 – Kentucky
