Cars that run on gas and electricity are abundant, but how close to we are cars powered by the sun?

Closer than you may think, thanks to 24 teams from high schools all across the country (including ten from Texas) who will soon be competing in a race across the Lone Star State with solar-powered cars.

A team from Wylie High School will be competing in the 30th annual Solar Car Challenge, a five-day, 631.7-mile journey across Texas in a solar-powered car that they built with their own hands.

Per the Dallas Morning News, this year, 24 teams from seven states across the U.S. (ten from Texas, seven from California, three from Oregon, and one each from Michigan, Florida, New York and Washington) will race from Fort Worth to Fort Stockton, competing to see which team’s car can cover the greatest distance.

The opening ceremonies for the race will be from 8 to 8:50 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, at the Northwest ISD Administrative Building Parking Lot, with the race officially starting at 9 a.m. at 2001 Texan Drive, Justin, 76247.
