Last Friday, a new champion was crowned in the state of Texas.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officially deemed a squirrel named Chungus as Texas’ fattest squirrel!
The competition is modeled after the popular Fat Bear Week at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and began last year as a “friendly contest between Texas state parks,” according to NBC DFW.
Chungus was named a finalist, alongside Squirelly Temple, with Chungus ultimately taking the crown after a fan vote Friday afternoon.
16 parks around the state submitted a competitor for Fat Squirrel Week. Chungus was described as hailing "from behind the Lone Pine Boat Ramp Dumpster" at Cooper State Park, located northeast of Commerce.
Last year, Chunkosaurus Rex from Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose took the title as inaugural Fat Squirrel champion.
