It was a sad day in 2010 when Texas Stadium was demolished, but there is speculation that the lot, which now sits vacant in Irving, may become the future home of the new Dallas Mavericks arena.
The Mavs’ lease at American Airlines Center expires in 2031, and team CEO Rick Welts has already expressed the franchise is moving “full speed ahead” on a new arena, and is looking for a 30-50 acre site in Dallas to accommodate the team’s needs.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Companies affiliated with Las Vegas Sands own roughly 200 acres near the old Texas Stadium site, and the company’s chief operating officer is Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont.
Dallas stakeholders are “overwhelmingly” in favor of the stadium remaining inside city limits, but former Irving City Council member Brad LaMorgese says that with the former Texas Stadium lot, “You could do world-class everything over there because there’s so much space.”
Welts said in an emailed statement though, that the team is doing everything it can to make sure they stay in Dallas proper.
“As we have said, we are focused on working with the City of Dallas to identify a site for a new Mavericks arena and entertainment district,” he said.
“We are doing deep dives on potential Dallas sites now with the hope of selecting a site by the end of the first quarter of 2026.”
