Teachers are often praised for the time they put in, but in many cases it’s also the money they spend in order to give children a proper education. With the school year officially underway, many teachers have spent their own money to make sure their classrooms had everything that was needed. While this goes on all over the country, it is especially hard on Texas teachers, as a new study has revealed teachers in the Lone Star state spend more out-of-pocket than anywhere else in the country.
Texas teachers will spend an average of 47 hours per week working, but their contribution goes far beyond that. A new study by My ELearning World found that Texas teachers will spend $298 million on out-of-pocket classroom expenses for the 2022-2023 academic year. This includes purchasing books, pencils, snacks, décor, cleaning supplies and more for their classrooms.

According to Dallas Culture Map, the next closest state is California, whose teachers will spend $240 million. Many have pointed to this as a possible reason for the current teacher shortage. Hopefully something is resolve din the future, and Texas teachers won’t have to pay so much.
