This is one of the best times of the year for sports fans in DFW. The NBA and NHL seasons are coming to an end, the MLB season is underway, and the NFL draft is right around the corner. However, this weekend the sporting attention will be on something else in North Texas; rowing. The Texas State Rowing Championship is coming to White Rock Lake this weekend, and it will be the first time the event is ever held in the metroplex.
After 20 years in Austin, the Texas State Rowing Championship has found a new home at White Rock Lake in DFW. The event will begin on Saturday as more than 500 junior athletes from North Texas and across the state will compete this weekend. According to NBC DFW, it was White Rock Lake’s 2,000-meter race course that brought the event to North Texas.
"We kept thinking, we've got this giant boathouse, the largest boathouse in the state. We've got this beautiful body of water at white rock lake, and we need a racecourse. So we put it in, and Austin was like, yay! Y'all do states," said Sue Ellen Chambers, president of White Rock Rowing and White Rock Boathouse. The two day event is free to the public, so maybe this is the time to finally get into rowing.
