Car companies have been working on self-driving cars for a few years now, with some examples already seen on the road today. However, Toyota may have just taken the next step in making autonomous driving an everyday reality. The carmaker recently shared a video of a modified Toyota Supra autonomously drifting around obstacles on a closed track, and they claim they are the first do ever complete this goal.
The Toyota Research Institute has been working on taking autonomous driving technology to the next level by creating driving systems that can react in situations where human drivers can't. "Through this project, we are expanding the region in which a car is controllable, with the goal of giving regular drivers the instinctual reflexes of a professional race car driver to be able to handle the most challenging emergencies and keep people safer on the road," said Avinash Balachandran, senior manager of TRI’s Human Centric Driving Research.

As seen in the viral video, the car does a number of advanced maneuvers, such as drifting around obstacles, without a driver controlling the vehicle. According to Mashable, the video has been viewed over 60,000 times since being shared. With this new technology, the future is almost here.
