You can now legally drive the Smartcar equivalent of a pickup truck in Texas!
Last week, the Texas House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1816, which will allow Japanese mini trucks, also known as "kei trucks," to be registered by the state Department of Motor Vehicles and be driven on the road!
According to Chron, Texas became the 28th state to allow the registration and licensing of mini trucks.
David McChristian, the founder of Lone Star Kei, a kei truck enthusiast group, said after the bill passed, "After two and a half years of hard work, we're thrilled to see our goal achieved with the passage of SB 1816, which codifies the ability to title, register, and operate Kei vehicles in Texas.
"These compact, efficient cars offer an affordable and sustainable option for Texans, and the Texas Kei community is ecstatic."
