It's been 24 years since Jennifer Lopez graced the big screen with her portrayal of Selena Quintanilla in "Selena" the movie, and on Sunday, Lopez took to Instagram to mark the special occasion.
In a post to the social media platform, Lopez writes, "I can't believe it's been 24 years since the release of Selena. I'm so proud of this movie!!! So proud to be a small part of Selena's amazing legacy."
The caption accompanies a clip from the film in which Lopez's Selena performs a medley of classic songs.
Lopez goes on to say that she "studied [Selena] tirelessly," even attempting to mimic her exact finger movements. Actor Edward James Olmos, who played Selena's father in the movie, lauded her efforts in portraying the iconic Mexican-American star.
Lopez continued her celebration of the anniversary with a series of other Instagram posts as well, showing clips from iconic scenes in the movie.
According to Entertainment Tonight, "Selena" was Lopez's first major leading role after appearing in a number of smaller roles prior to "Selena's" release. Two years later, Lopez released her first debut album, "On the 6."
Selena was a famous female star known as the "Queen of Tejano." Known for hits like "Como La Flor" and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom," her untimely death in 1995 had fans everywhere mourning.
Lopez told Entertainment Tonight in 1996, "Selena was such a great role model and she broke so many barriers. She did so much great stuff for the Latino community, and gave all these little girls somebody to look up to.
"The movie, in that sense, can help in the same way, breaking down barriers in Hollywood [because] we've had so many problems getting good roles. For me it's such a blessing. It's an honor to be able to do this."
