According to Bon Appetit magazine, the tomato plant candle was “the smell of the summer last year.”

That obsession has seemed to carry over into 2026 as North Texas has become obsessed with tomato-scented candles.

Everyone from Trader Joe’s to Neiman Marcus has hopped on the trend and is offering their own brand of tomato-scented candle.

But why has North Texas become so obsessed? Rosemary Walker, owner of the East Dallas restaurant Walker’s places the candles in her restaurant’s bathrooms. She told the Dallas Morning News the candles remind her of her late mother’s vegetable garden.

“It’s like wine for me,” she said. “When I smell something that takes me back to a place from my childhood, I am immediately hooked.”
