LISTEN NOW: Fly on the Wall w/ Dana Carvey and David Spade: Sheryl Crow

After Carvey and Crow first shared nightmarish tales of their mutual suffering from sleep paralysis, Spade brought the conversation into a bit of real-life fright remembering Sheryl's old house in the Hollywood Hills. "I used to have wild parties at my house," she admits, "and I've only been thinking about it lately because of Salman Rushdie being in the news."
"So, Minnie Driver and I decided, this is years ago," Sheryl goes on to explain, to have a joint New Year's Eve party where both hosts would invite forty people. "That was gonna be it," she says. "By about eleven at night there must have been 800 people in my house, and one of them was Salman Rushdie. It was right after his book ['The Satanic Verses'] had come out and there was a bounty on his head. And I'm just like, 'Really?! Is somebody gonna get killed here tonight? What's happening?' Oh, I miss Hollywood."
Now a Nashville resident, "Once I adopted my boys," Sheryl says, "I just didn't want to live in L.A. anymore." At 15 and 12, "they seriously don't think I'm cool at all," she adds. "It would be weird if they did," Dana jokes: "'Oh my god, Sheryl Crow is cooking me pancakes!'" While David suggests they watch her Showtime documentary to learn a bit about her. "Do you think I should let them watch it?" Sheryl asks.
"It shows how tough you are, how hard you bust your a**, how good you are," Spade gushes. "First of all, everyone that's crazy about you; all these huge, huge stars that rally around you and you're singing with every single one of them... There's so many more levels to your whole life and career I had no idea about."
"I still think fame is a weird, it's a real mind trip and I didn't really adjust to it very well," Crow admits. "For me, instead of it being fun and something I could navigate and manipulate and use to build my brand -- which people didn't talk about 'brand' back then. Instead, for me it was pressure... I've always looked at my life as, 'OK how am I gonna f*** this up?' I've always been sort of uber-critical of myself, I don't know why. So fame was just one more avenue for me to fall short or embarrass myself."
"It becomes this thing... suddenly you're invited to the party with all the cool kids, and then you get this weird panic that's, 'When is this gonna stop?' and 'Oh, I wasn't at that event; I should have been at that...' It's another level of panic, it was for me at least. I didn't enjoy it."
