A teen girl jumped to her death from a car on a Texas freeway Monday evening while having an argument with her mother, police said.

According to Harris County Sherriff Ed Gonzalez, she opened the door of a moving vehicle and jumped out near 16827 North Freeway in Houston, TX. He said she was possibly 15 years old and did not reveal her identity.

CBS DFW said the incident happened around 9 p.m.

After jumping out of the car, the teen was struck by another vehicle that did not stop. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Gonzalez said the I-45 inbound lanes at 1960 were shut down after the accident. KHOU 11 said the lanes reopened for the Tuesday morning rush hour.

The girl’s mother is cooperating with investigators and it is unclear what they were arguing about prior to her decision to jump out of the moving car, said Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Gilliland said, according to the New York Post.

The outlet said investigators were working Tuesday to locate the driver who ran over the girl. Gilliland said it is possible that the person was unaware that they hit someone.

“We need to find that person and find out what happened,” Gilliland said. “Maybe they didn’t realize, but once they did strike [the girl], they should’ve realized it was a body and not debris or something.”

However, the driver who ran over the girl could potentially face a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, said the New York Post. Investigators will provide evidence to a grand jury to determine if criminal charges in the incident are warranted, Gilliland added.
