The melon-headed whale is an extremely elusive mammal that rarely comes near land.

However, over the weekend one washed up onto the shores of Mustang Island near Port Aransas.

According to Chron, this was just the 24th documented melon-headed whale stranding along the Texas coast since the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network began tracking strandings in 1980.

Despite the fact melon-headed whales rarely come close to shore, the TMMSN says they are the third most common whale species to strand on Texas beaches.
