PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – The next US Census will occur on April 1st, 2020. The U.S Census counts every resident in the United States and is mandated to occur once every ten years as per the Constitution.
“It is hugely important that we make sure everyone is counted once in the right place, and we make sure that we are connecting with partners, key leadership, trusted voices around the country,” Shelia Beasley, Pittsburgh Partnership Specialist for the United States Census Bureau told KDKA Radio’s Lynne-Hayes Freeland.
“Over $675 billion dollars of federal funds will be allocated to our counties and municipalities based on the data of the population count.” Beasley said. “Our roads, schools, community programs, faith based institutions, will all be impacted by the population count.”
There will be more electronic ways to give information for the upcoming census. “People will be able to respond to the survey online. We’re pushing people for the use of technology and for people to use the online service to complete the application,” said Beasley. The telephone and mail-in survey options are still available for individuals who do not want to use a computer.
Beasley told Lynne that the upcoming census brings many jobs to the local area. On April 1st, there will be two events in the city that can help individuals connect with jobs related to the census in their area.
‘The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh is having a job fair at their office in town, 601 Wood Street, from 10 till 2. You can go and get information about jobs, we still need to fill thousands of positions locally,” Beasley said. “We also have in the evening, with the sponsorship of our PA Representative Ed Gainey and Brother Rashad Byrdsong at the Community Empowerment Association a press rally and awareness event. We will have recruitment assistance there as well to help people get signed on for jobs.”
Information on jobs can be found here.
