PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Doctors at UPMC say they continue to send away tests for patients to see if they have COVID-19.

But Director of Infection Prevention Dr. Graham Snyder won't say how many tests have been done or on whom.

“You’re most likely in the United States to still be getting COVID-19 if you’ve traveled somewhere where you’ve been exposed to it or you’ve come in contact with a person who has COVID-19,” said Dr. Snyder.

Updating reporters Monday, UPMC physicians say they continue to work to develop their own test for the virus, as a Pitt lab works to develop a vaccine.

Dr. Alan Wells told reporters the challenge in developing a test is you need patients with the virus.

Fortunately there have yet to be any cases in the UPMC system.

Doctors also asked that if people are feeling ill, even a minor illness to avoid visiting elderly loved ones at long-term care facilities.

Dr. John Williams of Children’s Hospital says children can contract coronavirus at the same rate as adults but typically show more mild symptoms or none at all.
