As the City of Pittsburgh plans to take its gun laws to the state's highest court, Mayor Ed Gainey is asking for more power for local leaders.

Pennsylvania law prohibits local government from creating gun laws stricter than the state's.

Two courts have ruled that's what the City of Pittsburgh tried to do when council passed an assault weapons ban following the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting.

Monday, Mayor Ed Gainey called on state leaders to pass gun reform, or pass the power down.

"Put it in local leaders that know their city. Give us the right to preempt state law. Give us a right to ban military-style assault weapons."

The city says it plans to appeal to the state supreme court Monday, asking it to allow the weapons ban to stand.
