Driving the Turnpike will be more expensive in 2022, but Pennsylvanians are used to it by now.

Tolls have been raised annually since 2009 because the Commission was required by law to send $450 million a year to PennDOT.

That drops to 50 million next year.

Spokesperson Rosanne Placey says the toll hikes will continue in coming years but the amounts will drop.

"So we're seeing five percent this year", she says, "we may go down to four percent, and then three percent, in subsequent years".

A 5% hike goes into effect Sunday for drivers using either the E-ZPass or toll by plate systems, with an exception on the new Southern Beltway.
