New Pennsylvania law helps to alleviate substitute teacher shortage

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - Pennsylvania has a new law that addresses the state's substitute teacher shortage.

House Bill 412 gives school districts the flexibility to hire retired teachers and others that fall in different categories. Pennsylvania State Rep. Barb Gleim, of the 199th district, is the sponsor of the legislation.

"For the next two years, basically, the administration has the flexibility to call whoever they want, in whatever order they need, in order to staff the classrooms," Gleim said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Tuesday. "That includes retirees, that includes students that have 60 credit hours."

The governor signed the bill into law earlier this month.
