Attorney General Dave Sunday announced this week the state is getting the money as part of a nearly seven and a half billion dollar settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners the Sackler Family.
"That'll go to counties all throughout Pennsylvania to be utilized to help prevent addiction, to help get people into treatment, and to really do everything we can to minimize the harm from the opioid epidemic," he told KDKA Radio.
The settlement also requires the Sacklers to end their ownership of the company.
The exact amount will depend on the number of municipalities that sign off for it.
Sunday says the bulk of the money will come over the next three years, for prevention, treatment, and recovery programs around Pennsylvania.
He said he's seen the effects of addiction on the families of those struggling with it.
"I've been a prosecutor for a long time and some of the most painful situations I've ever been in have been talking to parents telling me about, you know, what their life is like watching their kids sort of, you know, slowly ebb away into the world of addiction," he said.
This is the largest nationwide settlement to date in the opioid crisis.
