Last weekend an explosion powerful enough to take six lives, destroy three homes and damage a dozen others ripped through the Rustic Ridge plan.
Plum Borough, on Allegheny County's eastern border, is a quiet suburban community of around 27-thousand people, but based on their response to the disaster you'd think there were 270-thousand.
Within minutes, 18 fire companies were on the scene. Neighbors were seen running barefooted to help others.
The response to a call for food, water and other aid was so strong, organizers stopped taking donations. Ongoing efforts to assist the families driven out of their homes are highly successful. The people of Plum will long be remembered for their strength, compassion and generosity.
We send our condolences to those who have lost family and community leaders and, at the same time, celebrate a triumph of the human spirit in Plum Borough.
