Churchill Borough will continue its series of public meetings Monday over a controversial proposal that would bring an Amazon distribution center to the former Westinghouse site.
The meeting will be held via Zoom, but protesters plan to organize outside the borough building beforehand.
The proposal has been subject to harsh criticism from some local groups and residents, claiming it has negative traffic, pollution and noise implications for the area.
Sandra Fox's group Churchill Future will be among those protesting. She feels their cause has grown over the last few weeks with more attention on the issue.
"I think as more and more people realize how close we are to disaster, they are becoming more and more upset," she said. "I think it's a matter of public education and we are growing in support, as more people learn what this means. There are many signs opposed to this on people's yards, but there are no signs on people's yards in support of this."
Hillwood Development Co. is representing Amazon. They told borough officials at a previous meeting their plan complies with the borough's zoning codes.
Borough council has already heard hours of testimony and public comment. Studies done on behalf of Hillwood Development have indicated noise and traffic changes would not have a large impact on the community.
Critics like Fox aren't buying it.
"It's a matter of our lives, our children's lives and this beautiful land that surrounds us," she said. "It's devastating to consider what this proposal will do to the community.
