State leaders have put an end to an old school form of medical training.
Previously, a Pennsylvania law allowed medical students to perform rectal, pelvic and prostate exams on patients under anesthesia without their permission.
That changed this week, when Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bill banning the practice without consent.
State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler led the effort.
“This bill not only restores autonomy for patients, it empowers medical students to make transparent and informed decisions knowing that their patients have given consent.” Said Fiedler.
About two dozen states still allow medical students to proceed with the exams without permission.
