The winter weather can take a toll on your car.
It's not so much the weather itself, but the road salt, and other chemicals, used to de-ice the roads. AAA's Jim Garrity says it can expedite rust damage to your car, and it's a good idea to go through the car wash a few times throughout the winter.
"You want to be getting, not just a normal car wash for the outside, but get one with that undercarriage blast, because that's going to get into those areas that really sees the ice, snow and salt build-up," Garrity said.
Many municipalities have recently shifted to more effective de-icing chemical, but they can be more damaging to cars.
According to AAA East Central, here are a few recommendations to take in order to reduce the potential for vehicle damage:
· When possible, limit driving immediately before, during and after winter storms when crews salt and de-ice the roads.
· Frequently wash your vehicle, similar to what Garrity told KDKA Radio.
· Always use a high-quality car wash solution.
· Repair any body damage and touch up paint scratches and chips that expose the bare metal.
· Give your car one, last cleaning in the spring.
