As the COVID pandemic continues to linger on, another viral infection is beginning to get its footing in the United States.

Monkeypox has now been detected in 12 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The once-rare illness, transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, is slowly making its way across the country once again. It has now been diagnosed in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and Washington, as well as the District of Columbia.

New York is the leader with at least seven cases confirmed.

“Most” of the cases in America have involved gay men who contracted the virus after sexual encounters, though at least one documented case is a woman who got monkeypox after having heterosexual sex, according to the CDC.
