Congressman Eric Swalwell suspended his bid for California governor on Sunday in the midst of several allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault.
So, what does Swalwell’s departure mean for the governor’s race?
Democratic strategist Steve Maviglio told CBS Radio that Swalwell was out of options as his frontrunner status evaporated over the course of a weekend.
“This wasn't just a bombshell; it was a nuclear blast,” Maviglio said. “I mean, his whole life seems like it's being obliterated.”
Political analyst Matt Rexroad told CBS L.A. that Swalwell will still appear on the ballot but he won’t get a whole lot of votes.
“Part of that whole math was that Swalwell was going to get 10, 15% of the vote,” he said. “Now he's probably going to get like 2 or 3% of the vote.
Rexroad added that most Democrats don’t have the money to capitalize on the Swalwell developments, with the exception of billionaire Tom Steyer.
Last week, a former staffer accused him of sexually assaulting her twice when she was too drunk to consent, which Swalwell has denied. On Friday, it was reported that multiple campaign staffers for Swalwell quit due to allegations.
While Swalwell still holds his seat in Congress, there are growing calls for him to resign. On Monday, the House Ethics Committee announced it would investigate the allegations against Swalwell.
