A California man allegedly attacked a pair of sheriff’s deputies while being held in custody, using a knife he fashioned while in his cell.

The attack took place at the Santa Clara County Main Jail. The inmate managed to escape his cell and ran at the deputies with what is being called a “jail-made” knife.

The incident remains under investigation, and so far no additional charges have been levied at the inmate, whose identity has not been revealed by police.

“Our correctional deputies play a critical role in maintaining law and order within the correctional facilities,” Sheriff Robert Jonsen said in a statement. “And this attack serves as a stark reminder of the risks our deputies face daily.”

The two deputies were treated at a local hospital for stab wounds to their shoulders and hands.
