FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Democratic presidential hopeful Julian Castro will meet with voters at an event at La Gran Plaza in South Fort Worth Monday evening. The event was organized by the advocacy group, United Fort Worth.
"We hope it'll be a conversation where he listens from various non-profit organizations here in Fort Worth about immigration, racial justice, systemic racism and things like that," says United Fort Worth's Giovanny Torres.
United Fort Worth hopes to book other candidates for similar discussions. Torres says an event in an area with large Hispanic and African American populations aims to bring people to the polls who may have stopped participating.
"Instead of having to pay $50 or $100 for a dinner plate or a meet-and-greet, come out and see for yourself," he says. "We need to listen to people's ideas and people's input."
United Fort Worth has been handing out fliers in English and Spanish in neighborhoods around La Gran Plaza, urging people to attend. The event at La Gran Plaza starts at 6 p.m. Castro is scheduled to speak at 6:30, followed by questions from community groups from 6:45 to 7:30.
A total of 24 people are now running for the Democratic nomination for president. After last week's debates, Castro and former Congressman Beto O'Rourke held campaign events in Austin.
This Friday, seven candidates have confirmed attendance at a forum organized by the National Education Association in Houston.
