DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - June is Internet Safety Month, and experts say it's a good time to talk with your kids about some of the dangers lurking on the internet.
"There's always new sites that are popping up, unfortunately, that some people use for inappropriate activities, or to make connections with kids," says Kyle Berger, Chief Technology Officer with Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. "The best thing for parents is to always try to be aware of what your child is doing online."
Berger says everyone, kids and parents alike, should be careful with who they talk to online and how much information they share.
"When a lot of us were growing up, we were taught about not talking to strangers and that type of thing," Berger says. "But when you're in the digital, online world ... sometimes that line gets very blurry. We tend to connect with folks from all over. We need to be very conscious with who we're connecting with online."
He says it's important for parents to stay up to date on new apps and websites that could be risky for kids to download or visit-- and he says there are great online resources to do that. Berger recommends a site called Common Sense Media, which you can visit here.
Berger says if you have questions for your kids, ask them. And he says make sure there is open communication, above all else.
"Ask questions, that's the most important thing," Bergers says. "Find out who they really know, and what they're doing when they're on their device."
