TARRANT COUNTY (1080 KRLD)- Thousands of families passed through the parking lots of Tarrant County College South Campus Friday for the annual "Back to School Roundup." Because of COVID-19, families were told to stay in their car instead of the usual festival being held.

"Of course, we miss the interaction, talking to people, seeing the different companies and learning new things," one mother said as she waited in her car with her two kids.

This year, no haircuts or physicals were available. Families were guided through the line, told to open their trunks and then supplies were loaded in to minimize contact.

Parents were also required to register ahead of time. Normally, organizers say the Tarrant County Back to School Roundup draws about 10,000 families. This year, they say they only had supplies for about 5,600, but they also say the need has increased as a result of COVID-19.

Tarrant County's Back to School Roundup was open to all districts in the county. Fort Worth ISD, the county's largest, has delayed the start of classes until after Labor Day and will only hold virtual classes for at least the first four weeks of school.

"This is completely different because of what's going on with the virus," another parent said as she waited for supplies.

Dallas ISD will hold the "Mayor's Back to School Fair" August 20 and August 21 at Fair Park. August 20 is for families that use public transportation and will be walking up to the fair. August 21 will be for families that drive through.

Families in Dallas must register by August 17: http://giveaway.mayorsbacktoschoolfair.org/
