Police: Beware of scammers using power outages to take advantage

Police are reminding residents to be on the lookout here in North Texas for scammers and criminals using the power outages to take advantage of people.

With millions of people in the cold and dark, police are warning homeowners about people that use the current situation to impersonate power workers.

Mike Mata with the Dallas police says there is no reason power workers need to get inside your home.

"They (utility workers) should be working on the lines and transformers, outside of your home," said Mata. "I would bring pause to anyone who is attempting to get inside your home."

If someone claiming to be a power worker is asking to get in, they should be able to show you an approved company ID.

"Everything they need is attached to the side of the home, on the gas meter, or off the pole (utility pole)" said Mata.

ERCOT says there is also a scam circulating on social media asking people to text their private account numbers. officials say don’t do it!

Utility companies don’t need your account information to get the power back on.
