A child is killed and an adult is injured Wednesday after a Trinity Railway Express train hit a car that tried to drive around a lowered crossing gate in Fort Worth.

The crash happened at Elliot Reeder Road and Colony Court, a crossing along the TRE line near the city’s east side.

Fort Worth police say the adult in the vehicle was taken to a hospital, while the child died at the scene. No injuries were reported on the train.

TRE service in the area was temporarily halted as investigators documented the crash and cleared the tracks. Officials have not released the names or ages of the victims, and the cause of the attempted gate bypass remains under investigation.

The intersection is one of several high-traffic rail crossings along the TRE corridor connecting Fort Worth and Dallas, where trains routinely run throughout the day.
